  • MPEG H.264 Replacement Underway

“The new High Efficiency Video Coding (HVC) is expected to compress video in resolutions from QVGA to 8Kx4K. It will be targeted at the same applications that use H.264 and MPEG-2 today.

A goal for HVC is to improve on the efficiency of H.264 by a substantial amount. If the gain in compression efficiency is not very large, HVC use is likely to be more limited as was MPEG-4 Part 2. Both the resolution and efficiency will be helpful for proponents of UltraHD, since transmission of UltraHD content to the home is technically possible today, but not economically feasible, according to In-Stat.”

  • Make Google Gears Work with Safari 4 beta for Mac

You can find a build that will work at this post:

    http://artfulco.de/post/81354511/google-gears-webkit-nightlies-safari-4-and-fluid-app

Or go directly to download the built Google Gears installer package:

    http://static.artfulco.de/google-gears/gears-3234.zip

This also solved it not working with wordpress admin for me. There are still some Safari 4 beta bugs that conflict with wordpress admin, but at least this helps speed up the admin.

  • iPhone FTP app from Transmit in the “near future”? We can hope, can we?

I got an answer from Panic regarding Transmit for iPhone development in the near future. I think this good news and we can hope (maybe):

transmit_iphone.png“Indeed, we get a lot of email about this. We’re currently busy working on our desktop apps, but we’re very excited about iPhone development, and hope to work on some ideas in the near future.”

  • iPhoto ’09 recognized one of my dog’s faces

I was astonished when iPhoto ’09 worked through my almost 10 thousand photos and recognized one of my dogs as a human face. In fact, I am guessing that, because this shot is kind of frontal, it recognized it as a human face. No problem with that. My dogs are part of the family and in fact I love the fact the application is recognizing their faces. The face of this dog looks quite human indeed…. :-)

  • Apple Brazil: Apple Shop Paulista Opens Officially

Today at 6:30pm the Apple Shop at FNAC Paulista was officially opened with a white ribbon cutting. Present at the event where, among others, the President of Apple Brazil, Apple Brazil’s Marketing Director and the Director General of FNAC in Brasil, who gave a short speech, welcoming everyone and thanking all the Apple Fan’s for their presence. The crowd was about 50 to 60 strong and somewhat timid, but gave applause after the cutting. Two photographers (not sure if bloggers, they did not look professional, but Mr. Shapiro and Co. gave a performance anyway) took some pictures. Customers where served Champagne and canapes, and a few blond, long haired, tall girls dressed in Apple Black guaranteed that eyes had something to look at other than Apple’s product line that was presented on the usual woodden tables with all devices functional for people to play with.

I observed that there where many accessories available now that where missing before, including a few mobileme boxes that went for R$189 ($119), not far off from the original price. One of the Apple consultants pointed out that pricing would gradually fall until christmas and that many of the accessories still missing would be on the shelves soon. Currently there are 2 consultants tending to curious clients visiting the Apple Shop at FNAC Paulista. Both are very friendly and knowledgeable. Since they are not salespeople and but consultants they are there for giving advice and answers to curious questions, and unlike sales people, they took time to talk with me for over 15 minutes and answer my questions.

Unfortunately I did not manage to talk to Mr. Shapiro, Apple Brazil’s President. I would have asked him when the iPhone will arrive here. All in all things are looking up. Keep you posted.

  • Microsoft drops Pricing for Microsoft Office 2007 in Brazil

Supported by a major advertising campaign in major newspapers featuring full and half page ads, Microsoft announced last week a major price drop for the localized version in Brazilian Portuguese of Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition. This is a smart and welcome move that has long been overdue. Pirated versions on CD can be bought around town for the price of about $7 per copy.

In light of a decision to curb piracy of their products, Microsoft has now changed the price of “Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition” from R$349 (ca. $205) to R$199 (ca. $115). This is following a slight price drop from about a month ago for the Windows Vista Editions in all its version of about 10%. Also that a good move, helping to prevent pirated versions of Windows Vista to be purchased by those with limited income.

I believe pricing is fair now. I purchased a copy immediately. A welcome bonus to the Home and Student Edition is the fact that it comes with a 3 seat license, so you can install it on your PC, your notebook and maybe on your mom in law’s PC as well. Non commercial use only, of course.

  • PC Solution: Windows Vista “error bootmgr” problem solution

At least this is how I did it after reading about this common problem after installing Windows Vista. In my case I installed a brand new license of Windows Vista Home Premium. The computer would boot up and give “error bootmgr” and offer to reboot with “ctr-alt-del” just to come back to the same screen. In my case the reason for this was that somehow Vista prefers IDE over Sata when booting? I had installed Windows with an IDE and Sata drive in my PC, while installing Vista on the SATA drive.

The solution to my problem was simple and done using the Vista DVD and unplugging my non-system HD:

    1) I opened up the case and unplugged the data and power cable from my IDE drive and rebooted the PC onto the Vista DVD.
    2) Select “repair” option and select to fix errors that prevent windows from booting on the following screen. It found an error and wanted me to reboot, do so.
    3) Let it boot back onto the Vista DVD once more select “repair” and again same 1st option on the following screen. It will repair now again and reboot again.
    4) But now let it boot into the system. Once on your desktop, remove the Vista DVD from your drive and reboot PC to test, should work.
    5) So now that Vista boots properly from its installed HD, I turned off the PC and reattached the IDE cable and power to my 2nd drive.
    6) Boot up and voila, the drive appears.
    7) Reboot again to test the proper startup a last time and now all should be starting up fine without errors messages.

It seems that Vista writes into the bootmanager to look for windows where it is not. This takes care of it. I think this was probably something they never tested. Many people have more than one HD in their machines, often also as in my case ATA, SATA and IDE mixed.

  • StarCraft 2: Blizzard confirms?

From diablo3.com: It took a good day of calls and emails, but Blizzard just got back to us about the rumor floating around that Starcraft 2 will be announced next month during their World Wide Invitation in Seoul, South Korea. According to a Korean website, StarCraft 2 is being developed in 3D with a new race and lots of changes for existing units. The site went on to say that additional details would be revealed during Blizzard’s WWI on May 19th in Seoul.

When reached for comment today this was Blizzard’s official response: “We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don’t have anything new to announce in that regard at present.” So that’s a yes on a StarCraft 2, eventually, and a yes to a product announcement next month. The only question now is are they one in the same. -Brian Crecente, from Kotaku
