  • Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 is the last season?

According to “The Movie Reporter” iesb.net, who have interviewed Olmos he says it will be most likely the final season for BSG. How sad, but then also he goes on saying that it will be the most exciting and “extraordinary”  season of all. While we wait for that to come in January 2008, we are looking forward to the tv and straight to DVD movies SciFi channel has greenlit for end of summer/fall of 2007. Can’t wait!

  • Lost Season 3 Episode 18 (3×18)

I wanted to throw in a comment here. When the  injured helicopter survivor woman (Naomi) says “eu nao estou so”, Mikhail says: “she said ‘thank you, thank you for saving my life.’” But this is the WRONG translation, he deliberately lied.

What she said was portuguese and translates exactly into “I am not alone.” And now we know something the losties do not know, unless she repeats this in english at a later point.

  • StarCraft 2 in 3D coming on May 19, 2007?

Do not ask me how they would claim to know this, but if it is true I am already bouncing up and down. Blizzard’s strategy for announcing new games have traditionally been by surprising the crowd at one of the major game eventsThisisgame.com reports (free translation from korean):

Starcraft 2 will be announced to the public on May 19th at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitation (WWI). On April 25th, according to the game company Blizzard Korea Entertainment, it is confirmed that they will announce Starcraft 2 demonstrating it with both videos and images. Furthermore, the developers of Starcraft 2 will be there, and have time to answer the questions. Starcraft 2 is being developed in 3D and there will be new race and some specific changes to remaining races. Details of only minor parts will be released at WWI. Blizzard invited more than a hundred of broadcasting teams from around the world for this announcement. Prior to this very secret moment on May 19th, they will not release any information. However, from the people who previously worked with Blizzard, there is trusted word about this information. A person who recently retired from Blizzard said there is development of Starcraft 2 and there will be an announcement. The chairman of Blizzard Korea said “we cannot answer anything about Starcraft 2, we will have a new game on 19th so please come and find out”. He refused to answer if new game is Starcraft 2. The shout caster “Um Jae Kyung” said “I expect it to be very balanced but have concerns regarding E-Sports, but I doubt there will be changes about E-sports in regards to Starcraft I. However, there will be most likely be another league for Starcraft II and e-sports will be much bigger. Since I’m one of the gamers, I’m very excited about this”. The 3rd WWI will be on May 19th ~ 20th in Seoul, and it seems there will be a lot taking place.”

  • Apple Imitations and Fakes: “Hypson”, “Excess” and “Dynacom” mp3 player “iPods” for sale at Extra (Brazil)

3448113 A13244814 A13470411 A1It always astounds me when I see these kind of cheap and obvious Apple product fakes. Today I am going through the in-store pickup catalog from “Extra“, one of brazil’s major retailers, and I see these 2 familiar looking mp3 players. One made by “Hypson” and goes for $152 offering 512mb and FM Radio.

Apple Fakes Ipod-3(Here is the ad I found today, click all icons for larger versions.) The other one quite obvious a total imitation of the iPod nano/mini, made by “Dynacom” and selling for $175/$221 (product link and in white) for the 512/1GB models. Supposedly boasting a “movie” feature. They offer them, you guessed it right, in white or black. Another complete imitation is this model by “Excess” (product link), also sold on their site. If I remember correctly Apple actually patented the clickwheel design. Specially the Excess and Dynacom players total copies. Apple, wake up! I will keep posting these kind of things.

  • Another happy Mac convert

Great report on how this 15 year PC users became a mac addict after he bought a MacBook Pro: “A little over two weeks ago I walked into the Apple store in Palo Alto and bought myself a new MacBook Pro. Yes, the new sexy Intel dual core MacBook Pro. And I went home and after not using a Mac for over 15 years, put my Dell PC notebook literally in the bookshelf and have been using this new Mac as my primary computer for the past 2 weeks.

And what do I have to say about the experience after two weeks? My God! This is f***ing amazing! For the past 15 years I’ve pretty much been a diehard Microsoft PC guy. I’ve mocked the religious zealotry of the cult of Macintosh. I’ve derided the senseless brainwashing that Steve Jobs seems so elegant at.”

  • “Heroes” TV Show: George Takei will play Hiro Nakamura’s father

285.Takei.George.111606I must say at first I approached this show as one more potential “Surface”, “Invasion” and the like. Since we are in a mid-season break and my favorite shows “Lost” and “Battlestar Galactica” are not on (oh god what am I going to do until next year?), I decided to give this show a chance after being recommended by a friend. Overall I was very skeptical, but now I am pretty much hooked. On top of everything George Takey who is “Captain Sulu” from Enterprise will join the cast as Hiro’s Dad. GREAT! “Superman had Jor-El. Batman has Wayne Manor. And now Hiro Nakamura has Captain Sulu. Figuring all great Heroes need to have come from somewhere, the hit NBC series has tapped Star Trek icon George Takei to play the father of Hiro Nakamura, the plucky Japanese office worker who happens to be able to bend the space-time continuum. “

  • What happens when a programmer decides he can design a UI

I had to laugh when I saw this one. And I must admit there is truth to it, I have made similar experiences with friends of mine who are programmers. Everyone please stick to theirs and what they do best! Click the image to enlarge the result. See what codinghorror.com posted:

Wgetgui-Screenshot“A developer needed a screen for something, one or two text boxes and not much more, so they created “the dialog”, maybe just to “try something out“ and always with the intention of removing it before the product ships. They discovered they needed a few more parameters, so a couple more controls were added in a fairly haphazard fassion. “The dialog” exposes “the feature“, something cool or quite useful. Admittedly “the feature” is more tailored towards power users, but it’s still pretty cool. The developer thinks of new parameters that would make “the feature” even more powerful and so adds them to the dialog. Maybe a few other developers or power users see “the dialog” and also like “the feature”. But why doesn’t it expose this parameter? New controls are added. Pretty soon the technical team are so used to seeing “the dialog” the way it is that they become blind to its strange appearance. Ship time approaches and the product goes through more thorough testing, and “the dialog” is discovered, but it is too late to be heavily re-worked. Instead it is given a cursory spruce-up.”

If you let your developers create your UI, hilarity ensues, as in this classic OK/Cancel strip. But when The FileMatrix is unleashed upon unsuspecting users, it’s more like a horror movie. I still get chills. And like a bad horror movie franchise, the FileMatrix is still alive and kicking, folks. Friends don’t let friends produce Developer UI. Part of being a good software developer is knowing your limits. Either copy something that’s already well designed, or have the good sense to stick to coding and leave the graphic design to the experts.
